High School (Grade 9-12)
How would you like to increase student attendance and academic performance? Read on!
This may change the way that you plan the school year.
Service-learning is a teaching strategy that links community service experiences to classroom
instruction. The following outcomes have been documented over the last 10 years:
- High school students who engage in quality service-learning programs showed increases
in measures of personal and social responsibility, communication and sense of educational
competence.
- Service-learning participation was associated with higher scores on the state test
of basic skills and higher academic grades.
- Students engaged in service-learning had higher attendance rates than control group
peers.
- Students who participated in service-learning reported gaining career skills,
communication skills and positive increases in career exploration knowledge.
- Step #1 After teachers receive Project Learning Tree
training, students will have the opportunity to experience trees, forestry
and the environment by working through PLT activities and becoming
comfortable leading activities with other students in their class or
building.
- Step #2 Participating students are guided in developing an outreach project
that allows them to explore specific issues facing their community. Each
project contains a tree planting, educational outreach and finally a
community action component. Support is provided each step of the way
including grant funding opportunities through PLT's GreenWorks program and
the "Free Trees for Schools" program that allows high school students to
receive potted trees to be planted in their community as part of an Arbor
Day or Earth Day celebration. The educational outreach encourages the high
school students to work with younger students as mentors, using PLT
activities, either in an ongoing school partnership or even in a one day
'environmental fair' type event.
- Step #3 The comunity action project has a longer implementation timeframe
and we have 3 'packaged' projects complete with lead resource professionals
or you are welcome to come up with an original project based on the needs
of the school, district or community. Suggested projects include
developing or improving a recycling program, water quality monitoring and
testing or conducting a tree inventory. All projects are designed to
allow students to become citizen scientists gathering real field data that
is actualy used by a government agency or organization.
- The Bulletin Board is designed for classes and students to exchange experiences with others around the state of Oklahoma and beyond.
- Students have the opportunity to share their forestry experiences through artistic creations in the Art Gallery.
